Last month Pinterest announced that they are set to add a ‘buy button’ to their website, allowing users to purchase products directly off Pinterest by tapping a blue “Buy It” button and using Apple Pay or a credit card.
The new feature will provide users with the ability to choose from around 2 million “pinned” items which will display the new button alongside the red “Pin It” button.
Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann said that “Pinners have been super clear about what they want next. People want to buy things on Pinterest.”
As 80 percent of Pinterest’s active users regularly access the site via mobile devices the ‘buy button’ was initially made available on the iPhone and iPad in the U.S. giving users access to 30 million ‘buyable’ pins. The company are said to still be working on bringing the feature to Android and desktop, which is set to be released later this year.
The question that has been posed by the industry though is whether this is a reaction to Google announcing that it would be rolling out a buy button on their mobile-search results, whilst on the same day Instagram also announced it was adding similar buy buttons on site adverts?
Either way, Pinterest’s new feature is a welcome addition and is likely to be a hit with site users and online retailers worldwide. After all, how many of us create mood boards on Pinterests with items that we’d love to buy? Well, now you can and it’s much easier than ever before!
