Best Search Results: Google or Bing?

It hasn’t even been a year since Microsoft rebranded their search engine to become Bing, yet it has already given Google some food for thought.

Google is currently in the process of redesigning their search results pages that borrow certain design characteristics from Bing. This, along with the fact that Google has already reacted to Bing’s recipe reviews by creating their own version, clearly indicates that Bing are causing a bit of a stir in the office of the worlds most popular search engine.

But the question is which one offers the most relevant search results? After all, that is why we all use search engines isn’t it?

The truth is that both Google and Bing still have their relevancy issues. We recently looked at an example of a query for "Matt Cutts" on Google, and the results left a bit to be desired. It wasn't that that they were bad exactly, but personalised results pushed the more relevant results further down the page, and Matt's Facebook profile was missing, despite Facebook being one of the most popular sites on the web.

Microsoft like to think that Bing gives all the right answers, and their recent advertising campaign would certainly seem to suggest they have a leg up over the competition in that regard, but they've got their own relevance issues. For example, I was looking the site that Bing says lists all of the latest features they've released. I couldn't remember the name of it, so I searched on Bing for "latest bing features". Given Bing's philosophy of wanting to provide answers, I would expect to easily find what I was looking for through such a query, but instead the first organic result is an article called "The Latest News from Bing" from November of 2009.

Results

The reality of the situation is that you will find the most relevant results on Google, Bing, or Yahoo depending on the term that you have searched for. None of the search engines deliver perfect results all of the time, which is why many online users carry out searches in various ways. This is not something that is likely to change any time soon unfortunately, so we have to either accept this fact or we can use a mixture of all three search engines to suit our ever changing search requirements..
