DMOZ Selling to BOTW

Rumour has it that the owners of Best of the Web Directory are in talks to purchase the DMOZ directory from AOL and if the deal is completed then it could cause a few interesting issues for Google who use DMOZ for its own directory listings.

It is well known that sites that are listed within DMOZ are given priority with Google, especially when it comes to the Google PageRank. However, should DMOZ be bought by BOTW then a number of issues will be raised.

This is due to the fact that Google have made it clear that they don't like links being sold from anywhere, especially directories. This includes directories asking for payment in order for a website to be featured within its listings. Now this is the interesting part because BOTW directory is NOT a free service. A substantial fee of $249.99 is required simply for them to review your site. This means that the review for inclusion is not a guaranteed inclusion within the directory.

However, as BOTW.org currently has a 6/10 Google PageRank then it appears that Google has no problems with the way that the site works at the moment.

We await further developments with interest.
